Overview

Aoraki / Mount Cook takes its Māori name from an ancestor turned to stone, said to be the eldest of three brothers whose canoe wrecked and became the South Island itself. At 3,724 metres it's comfortably New Zealand's tallest peak, and was the mountain Sir Edmund Hillary trained on before his 1953 ascent of Everest.

The surrounding national park, together with Mackenzie Basin below it, forms the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve — one of the largest in the world — thanks to minimal light pollution and consistently clear, dry air, making it one of the best stargazing locations on the planet.

Things To Do

  • Hooker Valley Track — the park's most popular walk, a 3-hour return trip to a lake facing Aoraki's summit.
  • Stargazing tours — guided astronomy sessions taking advantage of the Dark Sky Reserve's exceptional conditions.
  • Tasman Glacier Lake boat tour — a boat trip among icebergs calved from New Zealand's longest glacier.
  • Scenic flights — fixed-wing or helicopter flights over the mountain and surrounding glaciers.
  • Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre — exhibits on the region's mountaineering history in the village.
Tip: Book stargazing tours for a clear night if possible — the Dark Sky Reserve's reputation is well earned, but cloud cover obviously affects visibility, so flexible dates help if the forecast changes.

Getting There

Aoraki/Mt Cook Village is about 4.5 hours' drive from Christchurch, or roughly an hour from Twizel, via the Mackenzie Basin. There's no public transport directly to the village; a rental car or coach tour is the usual way to visit.
