Overview
The Christchurch Gondola climbs Mt Cavendish in the Port Hills, the crater rim of an ancient volcano separating the city from Lyttelton Harbour. From the summit station, walkways lead to viewpoints looking one way across the flat Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps, and the other way down into Lyttelton's harbour, itself a flooded volcanic crater.
The summit complex includes a cafe and a short 'Time Tunnel' ride recounting the region's volcanic and settlement history, and connects to several walking and mountain biking tracks along the Port Hills ridgeline for those wanting to explore further on foot.
