Car and campervan rental companies operating in New Zealand, for planning your own road trip.

Renting a Car

New Zealand drives on the left, so rental cars are right-hand drive — worth a moment of adjustment if you're used to the opposite. You'll need a full, valid driver licence in English (or an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence if it isn't); most companies set a minimum rental age of 21, often with a young-driver surcharge under 25. Book ahead for the summer peak (December–February) and school holidays, and if you're planning a one-way hire between the North and South Islands, check the relocation fee and whether the car can even cross on the Cook Strait ferry — many rental agreements don't allow it.

Renting a Campervan or Motorhome

A campervan or motorhome combines transport and accommodation, and it's one of the most popular ways to road-trip New Zealand. If you plan to "freedom camp" outside of holiday parks and campgrounds, your vehicle generally needs to be certified self-contained (with a toilet and fresh/grey water systems) to legally stay overnight in most public areas — freedom camping rules vary by region and have tightened in recent years, so check local and Department of Conservation rules for wherever you're headed. As with cars, book well ahead for summer, and confirm one-way inter-island fees and ferry logistics with your provider.
