Overview
Tahunanui Beach is Nelson's most popular swimming beach, a wide stretch of sand just a few minutes from the city centre with shallow, gently shelving water that makes it especially well suited to families. Nelson's reputation as one of New Zealand's sunniest cities makes the beach a reliable spot for a swim for much of the year.
The adjoining Tahunanui Beach Reserve has playgrounds, a skate park and picnic areas, and the beach itself backs onto a stretch of dunes that separate it from the suburb behind — giving it a slightly more open, natural feel than a typical city beach.
Things To Do
- Swimming — shallow, sheltered water makes this one of the region's most family-friendly beaches.
- Beach reserve — playgrounds, picnic areas and a skate park adjoining the sand.
- Walking and cycling — a path runs along the beachfront, popular for an easy stroll or ride.
- Kite flying and beach games — the open, flat sand is popular for casual beach activities.
- Sunset viewing — west-facing, giving good evening light over Tasman Bay.
Getting There
Tahunanui Beach is about 10 minutes' drive from central Nelson, or a short local bus ride. There's parking at the beach reserve.
