Overview
Kaiteriteri is a small beach settlement that swells considerably over summer, serving as the main gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. Its own beach — clear, calm and framed by the same golden granite sand as the park further north — is popular enough on its own that many visitors spend a day here without ever boarding a water taxi.
The settlement has a long history as a holiday spot for locals from Nelson and Motueka, and remains a low-key, family-oriented beach town rather than a heavily developed resort.
Things To Do
- Swimming — a calm, sheltered beach that's safe and popular for families.
- Water taxi departures — the main launch point for day trips and multi-day walks into Abel Tasman.
- Kayak hire — rent a kayak locally to explore the coastline independently.
- Kaka Point and Breaker Bay — short walks to smaller, quieter coves either side of the main beach.
- Summer markets and festivals — the settlement hosts seasonal events during the peak summer months.
Getting There
Kaiteriteri is about 15 minutes' drive from Motueka and around an hour from Nelson. There's parking near the beach, though it fills quickly on peak summer days.
