Overview

The Otago Peninsula's combination of sheltered harbour and exposed open coast, within a short drive of a city, makes it an unusually accessible place to see genuinely rare wildlife. The Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head sits beside the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross anywhere in the world — with a wingspan of up to three metres, they're among the largest flying birds on Earth.

Further around the peninsula, several beaches and reserves protect breeding colonies of yellow-eyed penguins — among the rarest penguin species in the world — as well as New Zealand fur seals, which haul out on the rocks in large numbers.

Things To Do

  • Royal Albatross Centre — guided viewing of the only mainland royal albatross colony in the world.
  • Yellow-eyed penguin viewing — several beaches and private reserves offer guided penguin-watching hides.
  • Fur seal colonies — accessible viewing points at several beaches around the peninsula.
  • Larnach Castle — New Zealand's only castle, built in the 1870s, with gardens open to visitors.
  • Scenic drive — the peninsula road itself winds along dramatic coastal cliffs and harbour views.
Tip: Book wildlife tours ahead, especially for the albatross colony and penguin hides — access to breeding sites is limited and guided to minimise disturbance to the birds.

Getting There

The Otago Peninsula extends from central Dunedin, with Taiaroa Head at its tip about 40 minutes' drive from the city centre. There's no public transport around the peninsula; self-driving or a guided tour are the practical options.
