Overview

Gisborne is the first place in New Zealand to see the sunrise each day, and also one of its warmest and sunniest wine-growing regions. The fertile Poverty Bay Flats produce roughly a fifth of the country's wine grapes, and the region has built its reputation on Chardonnay, alongside increasingly well-regarded Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Chenin Blanc.

Unlike Marlborough's larger-scale wine industry, most Gisborne producers are small, family-owned operations, many with cellar doors open for tastings right on the vineyard. It's a relaxed, low-key wine trail rather than a bus-tour circuit.

Things To Do

  • Cellar door tastings — most Gisborne wineries offer tastings directly from the producer.
  • Vineyard lunches — several wineries pair tastings with a light lunch overlooking the vines.
  • Self-drive wine trail — the region's wineries are close enough together for an easy self-guided loop.
  • Harvest season visits — February to April, when the flats are at their most active.
  • Local produce — Gisborne's warm climate also supports citrus, feijoas and other local produce worth seeking out.
Tip: Arrange a designated driver or a small-group tour if you're visiting more than one or two cellar doors — most wineries are a short drive apart rather than walkable.

Getting There

The wine region sits on the Poverty Bay Flats just outside Gisborne city, with most wineries within a 15–20 minute drive of the centre. Self-driving is the most practical option, though local wine tour operators run guided trips.
