Overview

Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of New Zealand’s most important cultural institutions. It is housed in a grand neoclassical landmark in the Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park on the rim of a dormant volcano.

The museum is both a war memorial and a living cultural centre, with major Māori and Pacific collections, natural history exhibits, and rotating displays on Auckland’s stories and environment.

Highlights include the Tāmaki Herenga Waka gallery, the Grand Atrium under the copper dome, and extensive displays covering the natural sciences, Māori taonga and New Zealand’s military history.

Things To Do

  • Explore Tāmaki Herenga Waka: Stories of Auckland, a permanent gallery that traces the city’s land, water and people.
  • Walk through the Grand Atrium and admire the suspended wooden bowl and architectural dome addition.
  • See the museum’s Taonga Māori collection including Hotunui and Te Toki-a-Tāpiri.
  • Visit the war memorial galleries and the Hall of Memories dedicated to New Zealand service personnel.
  • Stroll the Auckland Domain grounds and the nearby Wintergardens before or after your visit.
Tip: Buy tickets online in advance and allow extra time for the museum’s large galleries, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Getting There
