Overview
The Treaty of Waitangi, signed here on 6 February 1840, is New Zealand's founding constitutional document, establishing British governance while (in the Māori-language version) guaranteeing Māori chieftainship over their lands and treasures. The differences between the English and Māori texts remain central to New Zealand's ongoing conversation about the Treaty's meaning, and the grounds are a place many New Zealanders visit to engage with that history directly.
The site includes the Treaty House (the restored 1830s home of British Resident James Busby), the whare rūnanga (meeting house) built for the Treaty's 1940 centenary, and Ngātokimatawhaorua, one of the largest ceremonial waka (war canoes) in the world, launched on the same anniversary.

Getting There
The Treaty Grounds are just outside Paihia in the Bay of Islands, about a 3-hour drive north of Auckland. There's parking on site, and it's an easy walk from central Paihia.
