Overview

The Treaty of Waitangi, signed here on 6 February 1840, is New Zealand's founding constitutional document, establishing British governance while (in the Māori-language version) guaranteeing Māori chieftainship over their lands and treasures. The differences between the English and Māori texts remain central to New Zealand's ongoing conversation about the Treaty's meaning, and the grounds are a place many New Zealanders visit to engage with that history directly.

The site includes the Treaty House (the restored 1830s home of British Resident James Busby), the whare rūnanga (meeting house) built for the Treaty's 1940 centenary, and Ngātokimatawhaorua, one of the largest ceremonial waka (war canoes) in the world, launched on the same anniversary.

Things To Do

  • Museum of Waitangi — exhibits on the Treaty's signing, its two texts, and its ongoing significance.
  • Treaty House — the restored home of James Busby, where early Treaty discussions took place.
  • Te Whare Rūnanga — a carved meeting house representing NZ's major iwi, built for the 1940 centenary.
  • Cultural performance — a haka and waiata (song) show held in the meeting house grounds.
  • Ngātokimatawhaorua waka — view one of the world's largest ceremonial war canoes, housed on-site.
Tip: Guided tours run several times daily and are included in general admission — they add substantial context to the grounds that's easy to miss walking through independently.
