Overview
The Three Sisters are soft sandstone sea stacks carved out of the cliffs at Tongaporutu on Taranaki's north coast, constantly reshaped by erosion — one of the original 'sisters' collapsed in 2016, a reminder of how quickly the coastline here changes. A short walk further along the beach, Elephant Rock is a distinctive arch-shaped formation resembling its namesake.
Because the formations sit on an open beach reached via a stream crossing, access depends entirely on the tide — the site is only safely reachable within a window either side of low tide, and visiting at the wrong time can mean turning back without seeing anything.
Things To Do
- Beach walk to the sea stacks — a roughly 30-minute walk along the beach and through a stream crossing.
- Elephant Rock — a distinctive rock arch a little further along the same beach.
- Photography — the sea stacks and dramatic black-sand coastline are especially striking near sunset.
- Rock pool exploring — low tide exposes pools among the rocks worth a look for younger visitors.
- Tongaporutu village — a tiny settlement nearby with basic facilities and beach access information.
