Overview
Te Papa Tongarewa — 'the place of treasures' — opened on Wellington's waterfront in 1998 and has been New Zealand's most visited museum ever since. Its collections range from a full-scale colossal squid specimen to significant Māori taonga, an active marae, and interactive exhibits on New Zealand's earthquakes and volcanic activity.
The museum was deliberately designed to be accessible and hands-on rather than purely academic, with bicultural exhibition design reflecting both Māori and Pākehā perspectives on the same history — an approach that was unusual for a national museum when it opened and remains central to how it presents the country's story.
Things To Do
- Te Marae — Te Papa's own active marae (meeting ground), used for ceremonies as well as display.
- Mountains to Sea — natural history exhibits including the colossal squid and native wildlife dioramas.
- Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War — WWI exhibits featuring hyper-realistic large-scale figures by Weta Workshop.
- Bush City — an outdoor area with native bush and a swing bridge, popular with children.
- Rooftop garden — native plantings and harbour views on the museum's upper level.
