Hamilton Gardens

Overview
Hamilton Gardens takes a different approach to most botanical gardens: rather than grouping plants by species, it presents garden design itself as the subject, with each themed garden built as an enclosed, immersive space representing a particular culture or era — a walled Italian Renaissance garden, a Japanese Contemplation Garden, an English flower garden and a traditional Māori garden among them.
The gardens have won International Garden of the Year at the International Garden Tourism Awards, and new themed gardens are still being added, including a productive Kitchen Garden and an American Modernist garden.
Things To Do
- Paradise Garden Collection — walk through Italian Renaissance, Japanese, Chinese, English and Indian gardens.
- Te Parapara — a traditional productive Māori garden, developed with local iwi.
- Fantasy Collection — themed gardens including a Tudor and a Surrealist garden.
- Productive Gardens — a working Kitchen Garden and Herb Garden.
- Riverside walks — paths along the Waikato River bordering the gardens.
