Overview

Devonport sits on a peninsula across the harbour from the CBD, reached by a short and scenic ferry ride. Its heritage streets of restored Victorian villas, boutique shops and cafes along Victoria Road have made it a popular half-day trip, but the peninsula's two volcanic cones are its real drawcard.

North Head (Maungauika) was fortified from the 1880s through both World Wars, and its network of tunnels, gun emplacements and underground magazines can still be explored today. Mt Victoria (Takarunga) offers some of the best harbour and city views in Auckland. Devonport has also been home to a Royal New Zealand Navy base since 1841, and remains an active naval station.

Things To Do

  • North Head Historic Reserve — explore WWII tunnels, gun emplacements and coastal defence history.
  • Mt Victoria summit — an easy walk up Takarunga for 360° views over the harbour and city skyline.
  • Victoria Road — browse independent shops, galleries and cafes along the village's main street.
  • Torpedo Bay Navy Museum — the story of the Royal New Zealand Navy, right on the waterfront.
  • Cheltenham Beach — a sheltered swimming beach a short walk from the village centre.
Tip: Bring a torch if you want to properly explore North Head's tunnels, and check the ferry timetable — the last services back to the city run earlier in the evening than you might expect.

Getting There

Fullers ferries run frequently from Auckland's Downtown Ferry Terminal to Devonport, taking about 12 minutes — by far the easiest way to arrive. It's also reachable by road via the Auckland Harbour Bridge, roughly 20–30 minutes from the CBD depending on traffic.
